The Communist Party of India (CPI) has said that while celebrating the
50th anniversary of India's independence the contribution made by
communists and revolutionaries should be highlighted.

Briefing reporters after the CPI's national council meeting, the party's
national executive member Shamim Faizee said, "The official history does
not recognise the role played by the communists and revolutionaries."

The national council on Monday passed a resolution listing a 10-point
programme which the party will implement for celebrating the 50th
anniversary. "The ideas of socialism developed during the freedom
movement and the role played by the left In the national movement should
be highlighted," the resolution stated. In the celebrations, veterans of
the movement from other streams of struggle should also be invited, It
added.

When Mr Faizee's attention was drawn to the allegations that the
communists did not participate In the freedom struggle and that it had
performed a somersault during the World War II, he said the people were
aware of the role played by them. It was the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh
which was not a part of the freedom struggle, he alleged. He added that
prominent participants In the 1942 Quit India movement like Aruna Asaf
Ali and Nana Patil had joined the communist party.

The national council resolution said the CPI will seek to revive the
spirit of the struggle for Independence and restore values to public
life. This was necessary to combat the "neo-colonial" policies being
dictated by the World Bank.

The resolution has asked every state council to bring out a book on the
role of communists in the freedom struggle.

In another resolution, the CPI regretted that many of the struggles in
which workers and farmers had played an prominent role, have not been
recognised by the Central government. The importance of such struggles
were downgraded by vested Interests.

The national council passed 13 resolutions and approved the general
secretary's report during Its three-day. session which concluded on
Monday. The report will be released to the press on Tuesday, Mr Faizee
said.

The CPI has also criticised the Israeli government for disrupting the
Middle East peace process. It condemned the Israeli government "for its
deliberate delay in implementing the solemn agreements it has made with
the Palestine Liberation Organisation."

The resolution also criticised the efforts to base Israeli war planes on
Indian soil. The resolution for the purpose was passed In the context
of Israeli president Ezer Weizman's recent visit to India.

The party has opposed the privatisation of the Karnataka state road
transport corporation and extended Its support to the struggle launched
by KSRTC employees against this move.
