With the 13-party UF Government appearing increasingly fragile
less then eight months into office, India Today commissioned
ORG-MARG, the country's leading market-research organisation, to
conduct a nationwide opinion poll. It was conducted between
January 18 and 21 in 51 parliamentary constituencies across 16
states (Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana,
Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Punjab,
Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal). The
ORG-MARG team interviewed 12,832 registered voters. The results
show that the BJP will garner an additional 4.5 per cent of the
national vote-translating into 46 additional Lok Sabha seats -
over its May 1996 tally, the gains mostly expected in Bihar,
Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh. Corruption charges against Congress
leaders are a factor. The Congress is not expected to gain in any
state while the UF shows gains only in Andhra Pradesh.
