In the last moments of Shanker Dayal Sharma's tenure, the BJP on Tuesday
urged the President to dismiss Bihar and Gujarat chief ministers Laloo
Prasad Yadav and Shankersinh Vaghela.
Two delegations of BJP members called on President Sharma at Rashtrapati
Bhavan and sought the dismissal of the two chief ministers and imposition
of President's rule in the two states.
While leader of Opposition Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Samata Party President
George Fernandes led the delegation of BJP-Samata representatives from
Bihar, the party's MP from Gujarat Kashiram Rana headed the delegation of
MPs from Gujarat.
The Vajpayee-led delegation spent nearly 45 minutes with the President,
impressed upon him the need to uphold the credibility of the Constitution
and thus urged him to ask the Central Government to dismiss Laloo Prasad
Yadav for his alleged involvement in the multi-crore fodder scandal.
The law and order situation in the state too had deteriorated, said BJP
Bihar President Ashwini Kumar, at a press conference.
Recalling how the BJP-Samata MLAs were beaten up by Rashtriya Janata Dal
members, inside and. outside the State Assembly, the BJP leaders said if
this was the plight of elected representatives then the fate of the common
people could well be understood.
They also lamented that so far none of the 16 members of RJD with criminal
antecedents, who led the assaults on BJP-Samata members, were booked by the
police. The Bihar police has not even registered FIRs against the alleged
culprits, they said.
The delegation in a memorandum, said Laloo Prasad Yadav's Government had
'manipulated' majority in the Assembly and his continuance in office was a
'black mark on Indian democratic traditions'.
They said Prime Minister I K Gujral's expressing inability to tackle with
the prevailing situation in Bihar only showed his weakness in dealing with
persons in high offices involved in corrupt practices.
The delegation, which also included the leader of the Opposition in the
Bihar Assembly Sushil Modi, said the previous memorandum submitted to the
President did not seem to have had any effect on the Central Government.
They also briefed the President on the incidents that occurred within the
precincts of the assembly on the day the vote of confidence was taken when
BJP and Samata Party MLAs were allegedly beaten up by ruling party MLAs.
They apprised the President of the breakdown of law and order machinery in
the state and misuse of power by the Chief Minister.
BJP delegation Gujarat urged the President to dismiss Vaghela's Government.
