CALCUTTA, June 23. - Army authorities at Fort William today said the
Jamaat-e-Islami may have connived with the ISI in carrying out
yesterday's bomb attack at New Jalpaiguri station.
The Ulfa, a senior officer said, is only trying to cash in on the act
of sabotage believed to have been targeted at Army personnel bound for
Kargil.
The number of jawans killed has gone up to four, with one more dying
in hospital.
The Army has information that members of Jammat-e-Islami, a banned
fundamentalist organisation, have been spotted in Siliguri, Jalpaiguri
and elsewhere in North Bengal.
The outfit reportedly had plans to disrupt troop movement to Kashmir.
A top Army officer said Eastern Command headquarters recently warned
the state government about a possible bomb attack in North Bengal, but
the chief minister said he was not aware of any such information from
the military.
Contacted at his residence, Mr Jyoti Basu said: "Even yesterday I sat
with the chief secretary and the home (police) minister, but this
matter was not raised at all. I am not aware of any report sent by
the Army of late on a possible attack by insurgents." He said he would
look into the matter.
But the officer said: "We had apprised the chief secretary, Mr Manish
Gupta, of possible attacks by terrorist groups. We gave him specific
details, asking him to take appropriate action."
