The National Liberation
Front of Tripura has threatened to close all Hindu schools and institutions
in tribal areas run by Ratanmoni Seva Mission, an affiliate of Banabasi
Kalyan Ashram.
The authorities of all
these Hindu schools and service centres have been asked by the militant
organisation to "stop" their activities. Sources in the Banabasi Kalyan
Ashram here said all schools, service and health centres were under threat,
"and a number of them have already been abandoned."
A group of armed NLFT
militants had torched a residential school and students hostel run by the
Seva Mission in remote Ananda Bazar area of North Tripura on July 8. The
rebels also tried to kill 32 inmates of the hostel but the students managed
to flee. The school and the hostel have since been closed.
In another incident the
rebels stormed the Longtarai Seva Mission and school in the remote Chhawmanu
area of Dhalai district in August. They threatened all inmates with dire
consequences if the daily prayer, sessions and kirtans were not stopped.
Following the threat the mission and the school remained closed for a week,
official sources said. Another school, Sri Gouranga Vidyamandir, run by
the mission in Jampuijala area of Bishalgarh sub-division, 30 kin from
here, has also been threatened by the NLFT.
