Mumbai, Oct 28 (AFP) - India's western
town of Malegaon remained tense Sunday, a day after police shot dead at
least seven people in a violent demonstration against US- led attacks on
Afghanistan, officials said.
"The town continues to be under
curfew for the second consecutive day after Friday's clash between the
police and some anti-US protestors. The situation is tense but under control,"
a police inspector in Malegaon said.
"No fresh case of rioting has been
reported," he said, adding the curfew imposed after the violence had been
extended indefinitely.
Police gunned down seven and injured
over 10 people Friday in the town in Maharashtra state when a mob of over
100 Muslim protestors turned violent after their weekly prayers.
The clashes took place when police
prevented the protestors from distributing leaflets asking shopkeepers
and traders to boycott US goods.
Muslim organisations in Malegaon
and in the state capital Bombay have claimed that at least 13 protesters
were killed by the anti-riot police.
