International general secretary
of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Pravin Togadia, was arrested at Bhusawal
station in Jalgaon on Wednesday morning, Maharashtra Minister of State
for Home Kripashankar Singh said.
Describing Togadia's arrest as a
preventive one, Singh said the VHP leader has been asked to return to New
Delhi in view of the volatile situation in Malegaon area in Nasik following
riots in the region.
Director General of Police Dr. Subhash
Malhotra said: "We have restrained him from going to Jalgaon and requested
him to go back."
Malhotra added that an official
order had been issued banning the Bajrang Dal rally to be held in the area
on Wednesday.
Togadia was to address the Hindu
Mahasammelan, organised by the Bajrang Dal in the area, national co-convenor
of the Bajrang Dal Milind Parande said.
