Seven Pakistani nationals were on
Thursday arrested in Pretoria on charges of staying in the country illegally
and of being involved in a major fake passport racket.
The seven were arrested along with
a former official of the Department of Home Affairs following raids on
several houses in the city, the police said.
"We believe the breakthrough will
open up a can of worms at the Department of Home Affairs," they said.
The Pakistani nationals are believed
to be part of a syndicate that forges or underhandedly arranges anything
from passports and marriage certificates to work, study and permanent residents
permits, police said, adding fake rubber stamps used to forge the documents
have also been seized.
