The City police today claimed to have arrested nine activists of the Muslim Defence Force (MDF), including a `key member' of the Force, who was allegedly involved in providing physical training to its members.

A police release said a group of militants, carrying explosives were arrested last month. On information provided by them, a team lay in wait near the Central Railway Station on Monday and nabbed Saifullah, Abdul Rahim, Alauddin, Mohammed Saleen, Mohideen Abdul Kadar, Syed Ali, Tenkasi Alauddin, Mohamed Hassan and Sheik Abdul Kadar.

Until a decade ago, Saifullah alias Kannan was a member of the RSS and had even attended the organisation's training sessions. After embracing Islam, he married a woman, who had converted from Hinduism to Islam. Saifullah was a lieutenant of the MDF leader, Kayalpattinam Hameed Pakkiri. He had provided physical training to its members and helped the trainees attend secret meetings.

All the arrested were remanded to judicial custody.

The arrest was made under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Pulianthope, S. Murugan.

The number of MDF members now in custody had reached 20.

Eleven were arrested in the past few weeks in different parts of the State.
