Comment in the original article: "Now isn't this interesting. The Canadian govt. could stand to take a page out of the Auzzies book."

"He has hit the nail right on the head!! We Australians suddenly found we had 10,000 Lebanese who had come to Australia and when they got Australian citizenship, and our Social Welfare benefits went straight back to Lebanon to live!! When the war broke out a few weeks ago, guess what - "We want to come back to Australia now where it is safe and we expect you to get us out of here, immediately if not sooner!!" We have just repatriated 4,000 "Australians" home, the other 6,000 decided to stay "home" in Lebanon, the biggest movement of "Australian citizens" in our entire history and at a cost of millions of dollars.

Well, the government finally woke up when the bills started coming and have now declared that those who lived in Australia will be paid for but those "Australians" who live permanently in Lebanon will each receive a bill for the cost of getting them out!! Like the Canadian experience, many complaints about how we didn't get them out quick enough or do enough to help - Hello!!!! There is a war going on!!

*My concern is how come we had so many in the Hesbolah area where the war is going on?? Are they or their relatives extremists* too?? Just stop firing missiles on Israel and the war will be over. Simple as that. Israel has always had a clear policy - "hit us once and we will hit you three times to teach you a lesson" - it's not rocket science. Stop firing at Israel and the war will stop!! Now, thanks to the TV and other media, we are being told that the damage to Lebanon is more than the damage to Israel. So???? How quickly we forget the Six Day War!!

Like Canada, we too are a very stupid country whose good nature, hospitality and the Aussie concept of "a fair go" has been greatly abused. *The policy of multiculturalism was forced on us by previous leftist governments and we have fallen apart as a unified nation. Don't dress like us, don't bother to learn our language, keep your dual citizenship, and don't even try to fit in with our society. Well, it hasn't worked anywhere else in the world either!!*

In my childhood and youth, we called all new immigrants "New Australians". This nation was built on immigration and it worked so well. The name New Australian carried the implication that you had come here to become one of us. Last year, for the first time in our history, we had race riots at a popular Sydney beach and we all watched in horror and shame at what has become of our wonderful country.

In some suburbs of Sydney and Melbourne there are no shop signs in English anymore and women go about with a hood over their head peering out through a slot as the world goes by. Mind you, even in summer, their menfolk are in shorts and tee shirts. Middle Eastern youth say on television they curse the day their parents came to this country, they disprove of our lifestyle because it is so different to Islam Sharia law and openly say "We will change it eventually and they all will adapt to us."

You came here to our homeland and we welcomed you! If you don't like the way we live, the airport is just down the road and please close the door on your way out!! Australia - love it or leave!! All we want to do is live life as we are. The ones who really try to fit in are just great, and a lot do. But 10,000 "Australians" in Lebanon - what were we thinking of in devaluing our citizenship so much!!

Cheers

This "Letters to the Editor" comment from Australia was also printed recently in a Canadian newspaper*
