Tipped off by a retired army jawan, CID sleuths
arrested two Bangla-deshi ISI agents from Howrah station on Wednesday. Secret
defence documents, videos of fidayeen attacks and two gelatin sticks were found
on them.
Sleuths believe the arrest of Alamgir Seikh
and Sha-mim Akhtar will help bust a Pakistani spy network in the country. They
had crossed the border illegally; intelligence agencies were looking for them
since December 2005, when Pakistani ISI agents Ainul and Salim Waqar were arrested.
CID sources said the duo was trying to recruit
ex-servicemen in Bengal. Alamgir, who had moved into his in-laws' house in Bagnan,
offered ex-serviceman Aurobindo Biswas a lucrative security job in Bangladesh,
but the jawan got suspicious when Alamgir sought military information.
Biswas said he did not know much, after which
the duo lost interest in him. Confirmed that they had an ulterior motive, he
informed CID. The Special Operations Group used Biswas as bait and asked him
to call Alamgir and fix a meeting at Howrah station. The ISI agents walked into
the trap on Wednesday morning.
Raids at the duo's hideouts yielded important
documents on army bases in north India, details of army headquarters in Delhi,
photographs and videos of army bases in the North-East, two Bangladeshi SIM
cards and CDs of fidayeen attacks. Alamgir and Shamim have been remanded in
police custody for 14 days.
