The picture of Maoism before us is translucent.
It is in fact an uphill task for the police to reach out to the secret documents
and papers of the Maoists, which is why we remain aloof of the actual facets
of Maoism," said Director General of Police (DGP) of Chhattisgarh police,
Vishwaranjan while speaking on topic 'Challenges of Maoism' here on Wednesday.
A poet by nature, Vishwaranjan was giving
lecture at Makhanlal Chaturvedi National University of Journalism and Communication,
organised by Mass Communication department. He spoke at length on the challenges
that police face and tried giving ground realities prevailing in Chhattisgarh,
although he parried the question raised on Binayak Sen's detention.
"Time has come for the people to decide
whom they wish to support -- democracy or Maoism. If we look at the documents
of Maoists we find the ideology presses on overtaking political power through
use of weapon. Out of the total violent activities in the country, 95 per
cent of them are Maoist centric," opined the DGP.
Apprising about the positive signs in the
Maoist-hit State, Vishwaranjan said that still 30 per cent of Chhattisgarh
is under Maoist control, other regions are being developed with basic amenities.
However, crisis of adequate funds is quite a constraint in way of fledged
development.
Quoting an example of Andhra Pradesh, he opined,
"Andhra Pradesh police have succeeded in fighting the formidable Maoists,
as AP police started the operation 30 years back. Here it has been started
from past four years."
