The BJP on Wednesday attacked the UPA government,
accusing it of shielding Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi in the Bofors
payoff scandal.
Senior leader Arun Jaitley said the Congress
could not distance itself from the latest revelation by the Income Tax Appellate
Tribunal on the Bofors deal.
On December 31, the ITAT had shot down the
appeal of Win Chadha's son Hersh saying "commission was paid to Quattrocchi
and Chadha illegally" in the Bofors deal. These "payments were made
illegally as the government of India policy did not allow middlemen in Defence
deals".
After a meeting of its core group, the party
said it would launch a nationwide agitation against the UPA on the corruption
issue. Jaitley said that the Congress has been trying to cover up various
scams which have hit the party. The main opposition party called for strict
action against those involved.
