Investigators believe that Faseeh Mehmood, an engineer from Darbhanga who was arrested by the Saudi Arabian police earlier this week, is the Indian Mujahideen’s (IM) original link to Bihar.

Mehmood, sources claim, attended an IM programme in Bhatkal around 2005 and left India after the crackdown on the organisation in 2008. He was introduced to the Bhatkal brothers, Riyaz and Iqbal, by another IM member, they say. Investigators claim Mehmood later did “talent-spotting” for IM.

Mehmood is one of the nearly dozen Indian terror suspects who investigators believe are in Saudi Arabia. He was reportedly arrested on May 13 and is expected to be deported soon. His wife has already been deported.

Mehmood, son of a doctor posted at the government primary healthcare centre at Benipatti, allegedly introduced his cousin Gauhar Aziz Khomaini and fellow villager Kateel Ahmad — arrested six months ago from Delhi in connection with Bangalore’s Chinnaswamy Stadium blast — to the organisation.

Mehmood’s reported arrest in Saudi has shocked Barh Samaila village. On May 6, a joint Andhra-Karnataka police team arrested Kafeel Akhtar from the village for his alleged involvement in the Bangalore blast.

“Faseeh comes from a well-to-do family, his father Firoz Ahmad is a doctor and mother is a school teacher. His grandfather Mehmood Khan was a block pramukh,” said a neighbour.

Mehmood studied in Darbhanga till Class X, moved to Aligarh Muslim University and then did his B.Tech from Karnataka. He has been working in Saudi for the last five years.

Darbhanga DIG Sudhanshu Kumar said, “We have not been told about this arrest so far. But we will surely cooperate.”
