Amidst the reverberating sounds of the nadaswaram and thavil and the melodious Vedic chanting by priests, the first Maha Kumbhabhishekam of the 33 feet tall Hanuman idol at Nerul was performed today. The ceremony, at the SIES temple complex in adjoining Navi Mumbai, took place under the guidance of Sankaracharya of Kanchi Sri Jayendra Saraswati Swamigal. Also called "Astabandhana Maha Kumbabhishekam" it is a Hindu temple ritual performed once in 12 years according to the Shastras to remove all that is inauspicious and increase prosperity and peace of the country, said V Shankar, Trustee of Aanjaneya trust. The five-day religious function leading to the Kumbhabhishekam involved different types of pujas and homas. About 50 Vedic scholars from all over the country are participating in the vedic rituals, he said. The idol, believed to be the tallest Hanuman idol in the country, was made out of single granite stone specially selected from a place near Chennai. It was consecrated by the Kanchi Seer on February 9, 2000, he said.
