As corporate houses build hospitals that are easily mistaken for five-star hotels, affordable healthcare is heading outside the reach of the average Mumbaikar.Which is why a state-of-the-art medical facility that allows the poor access to superspecialty and regular services almost for free emerges like an oasis in the desert.
Here, consultation fees range from Rs 100-200 on average, registration costs a mere rupee, while a seven-day course of homoeopathic medicine costs only Rs 15. Governor C Vidyasagar Rao will inaugurate the renovated Ramakrishna Mission Hospital in Khar on Sunday . State health minister Deepak Sawant will also attend the event.

Located in the RKM headquarters complex off SV Road in Khar, this hospital initially served as a hostel for students.

“The building itself is 60 years old, so it suffered enormous wear and tear. There was seepage in the rooms, the pillars were crumbling and there was real danger of collapse. We decided to go in for complete repairs,“ secretary of the Ramakrishna Mission Swami Sarvalokananda said.

The facility has catered to poor patients for 80 years and continues to charge nomi nal fees for consultation and treatment.

The 70-bedded hospital receives over a lakh OPD patients each year. “You will see a large crowd of poor patients from the minority community if you visit during the crowded morning hours,“ the swami said.

Eighty doctors man 33 departments, ranging from neurology , cardiology, nephrology , ENT, orthopaedics, rheumatology to dentistry as well as homoeopathy .

A host of corporate and individual donors, including actress Kangana Ranaut, have contributed a total of Rs 4 crore towards repairs. “Ranaut is familiar with the writings of Swami Vivekananda. She visited our headquarters in Khar to learn about our activities and then made a trip to our tribal welfare centre in Thane. She has donated Rs 30 lakh towards this hospital,“ mission representative Vivek Maharaj said.

ONGC, LIC, SBI and Mahindra & Mahindra contributed large sums.
