Answer
The mainstream media and the academia have been dominated by people, often called the Eminent Historians who are against any historians who debunk the pseudo-secular myths fabricated in the last few decades.
Historians like Goel published on topics which are considered absolute
taboo by the mainstream media. They openly criticized Islam, Christianity and communism. Goel criticized Indian secularism, alleging that "this concept of Secularism is a gross perversion of the concept which arose in the modem West as a revolt against Christianity and which should mean, in the Indian context, a revolt against Islam as well. [Link]
Historians like Ram Swarup and Sita Ram Goel objected to the re-writing of history by the Marxist historians of AMU and JNU. Goel called it "an insidious attempt at thought-control and brainwashing" and argued that the NCERT guidelines are "recommendations for telling lies to our children, or for not telling to them the truth at all."
They presented their work without any kind of self imposed censorship. That made it difficult to swallow for Marxist/pseudo-liberal leftist pseudo-intellectuals. Historians who don't want to whitewash the barbarism of Islamic invaders are seen as threat to the Eminents' ecosystem of lies, and hence they are subjected to all sorts of viciousness to malign them by ad-hominem attacks (e.g. calling them Hindutva historians, fundamentalists, hate mongers, RSS people etc.)
Notable works:
SR Goel and Chandmal Chopra: The Calcutta Quran Petition (1987): The book dealt with censorship, the banning of books and the Quran. It chonicled the events around a petition to ban Quran. What can be a more blatant disregard for political correctness! It's an interesting book that exposes the pseudo-secular discourse and how ruthless Islamic intolerance is towards any criticism. The book: [Available Online]. The wiki page is here: The Calcutta Quran Petition.
Chandmal Chopra tried to obtain an order banning the Koran, by filing a Writ Petition at the Calcutta High Court on 29 March 1985 as the Quran "on grounds of religion promotes disharmony, feeling of enmity, hatred and ill-will between different religious communities and incite people to commit violence and disturb public tranquility." He also included a list of several dozens of Quran verses that "promote disharmony" in his petition.
Chandmal Chopra was arrested and later released. Goel had to abscond to avoid getting arrested. However, it must be noted that the authors write in this book that they do "not stand for a ban on the publication of the Quran. We take this opportunity to state unambiguously that we regard banning of books, religious or otherwise, as counterproductive. In the case of the Quran, we believe and advocate that more and more non-Muslims should read it so that they know first hand the quality of its teachings."
* Ram Swarup: Understanding Islam through Hadis (1982): It was banned after remaining 8 years in publication. There was a criminal case against Goel for printing the book, the case was dismissed in 1997, but the book still remained banned. [Available Online]
* Ram Swarup and SR Goel: Hindu View of Christianity and Islam (1993): Goel and Swarup went into hiding because they feared that they could get arrested after a ban was demanded on the book. The court accepted a bail. [Available Online]

* Heroic Hindu Resistance to Muslim Invaders (636 AD to 1206 AD) [Online]

These non-mainstream historians were discriminated against by the Congress governments too. Goyal, interestingly, was a staunch Marxist in the beginning, and was critical of Congress and Nehru in his articles. When Goel wanted to apply for a passport in 1955, he was told that his case was receiving attention from Jawaharlal Nehru himself, and his application was not granted. He later turned to anti-Communism. [Link]
Nowadays the Internet is playing an important role in enabling more freedom of speech, introducing larger audiences to the works of the marginalized historians who didn't agree to play to the tune of pseudo-historians.
