Ever since the Left front government has been ousted from the Bengal takht in 2011 West Bengal Assembly Elections, they are desperate to be in the media limelight. The recent Jadavpur University 'disturbance' is a testimony of such negative politics from the pseudo Bengali leftists. The unwanted controversy over screening of Vivek Agnihotri-directed political film 'Buddha in a Traffic Jam' and manhandling of ABVP workers in the Jadavpur University campus has been disappointing to say the least. Especially the way the Communists misguided the University students and resorted to violence is shameful. The situation twisted and turned to such violent proportions that West Bengal Governor K.N. Tripathi remaked," Jadavpur University which was once known as centre for excellence is fast turning into centre for disturbances. The authorities should take stern action against it." Incidentally Governor K.N. Tripathi is also the Chancellor of Jadavpur University.

The 'Think India' group had announced that Vivek Agnihotri's 'Buddha in a Traffic jam' would be screened at the Triguna Sen auditorium, which is within the premises of Jadavpur University. The Jadavpur University alumni association is in charge of the Triguna Sen auditorium. On the day of the event they cancelled the event citing poll code violation. The decision of the alumni association looked dubious as the Kolkata phase of Assembly Election was already over.  Members of Student Federation of India (SFI), Federation of Arts Students (FAS), Arts Faculty Studnets' Union (AFSU) assembled in huge numbers. In the beginning they were showing black flags to the director Vivek Agnihotri. After this, 'Buddha in a traffic jam' was screened on the football ground premises close to the auditorium. The forceful screening of controversial 'Muzaffarnagar Baaqi Hai', a documentary on the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots, heated up the whole environment further.  Things turned uglier when four ABVP activists were held captive on the charge of molestation and they were beaten badly to say the least. Hundreds of BJP & ABVP activists under Roopa Ganguly assembled outside the Jadavpur University gate to release those 'hostages'. It was only after the Vice Chancellor Suranjan Das intervened, those four men were released. Later the agitating students sat in a dharna outside the Jadavpur police station in demand for filling FIR against those four ABVP members. On Saturday, the Communist backed student groups set out a march against BJP & ABVP workers.

Vivek Agnihotri, director of 'Buddha in a Traffic jam' remarked, "We started the screening and I asked the leader of the protest to have a cup of tea with me. Then the assistant registrar came from somewhere and asked us to stop the screening. I don’t know what kind of a university it is, they can’t even decide whether the film can be shown or not shown,” Vice Chancellor Suranjan Das has blamed the alumni association for the whole fiasco. He said," We have never given permission, nor cancelled it. The Triguna Sen auditorium is owned and managed by the JU Alumni Association and we have no say in its running. We have no control over to whom and when they will rent the hall, or the money they will charge. The main culprit is the alumni association. Why did they give the hall to Pune based organization in the first place, and then again cancelled it? We will talk to the alumni association." As far as open air screening on the ground premises is concerned, Suranjan Das further added," If any outside organization wants to hold a meeting on the ground, they need to take permission from the authorities. The organization which held the screening is not even remotely connected to the university. But they never bothered to take permission."

There is no denying the fact that 'Buddha in a Traffic jam' has been passed by the CBFC authorities and screening such a film should not be censored at any cost. The way the student body members agitated, it seemed to, the whole movement was pre-planned. Why the university authorities didn't call the police authorities in the alleged ‘molestation case’, is also a serious question to be looked at. The 'illegal confinement' and that too within a university campus as revered as Jadavpur University is completely against the ethos of basic humanitarian laws.  There is a popular opinion that in the upcoming Assembly Election results, the Left Front- Congress alliance is going to perform miserably. From this unwanted 'disturbance' and that too over screening of a film, it is evident that the Communists in Bengal consider BJP to be a bigger threat in the bigger perspective.  And let us not forget the fact, the way ABVP and BJP workers amassed in huge numbers and that too without any organization skill, it is evident that BJP certainly has a brighter future in the fading communist bastion of Bengal politics.
