Militancy claimed 2839 lives in J&K in the year 2000

Jammu - Pakistan-sponsored militancy took a toll of 2839 people, including 1520 militants, in Jammu and Kashmir during the last year, an official spokesman said.

During the year, militants gunned down 762 civilians, and injured 1258, he said.

Despite the unilateral suspension of anti-militancy operations announced by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, militants gunned down 98 civilians in December as against 69 in November.

The spokesman said the toll of security forces also went up during the just-concluded year. While the highest number of 397 security personnel, including 86 Jammu and Kashmir police personnel, lost their lives in anti- militancy operations, 864 were injured. In December alone, 31 security personnel were killed.

During the ceasefire period in December, 51 militants were killed, in retaliatory action, by the security forces. The toll in November was 163, he said.

In cross-firing incidents, 180 civilians lost their lives.

Since the outbreak of Pak-sponsored militancy in 1990 in the state, a total of 26,421 persons have lost thier lives. These include 12,336 militants and 11,600 civilians. Besides, 2482 security personnel, including 405 of the Jammu and Kashmir police, were also killed, the spokesman said. UNI
