THE BJP has accused the Indian History Congress (IHC) of "dragging Human Resources Development Minister M M Joshi into a controversy" at its just finished session for his policy statement on 'national curriculum framework of school education'.

In a statement here on Thursday, BJP state general secretary Tathagata Roy alleged that it was a matter of concern that unseemly controversy had been raised by "certain interested quarters" at the history congress.

"Ordinarily, it is not for a political party to comment on the proceedings of an academic body like the Indian History Congress.

"However, considering the manner in which the name of BJP, specifically that of Human Resources Development Minister Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi has been dragged into the controversy, has prompted us to react, " he said.

He said it was wrong on the part of the IHC to have invited politicians like (West Bengal Chief Minister) Buddhadev Bhattacharjee and (former Chief Minister) Jyoti Basu to chair the function.

"It is well known that communists can never separate their policies from matters that should be no concern of politicians. Even if Bhattacharjee is accepted in his official capacity as the Chief Minister, there is no reason for Jyoti Basu to be invited.

"And true to form, neither Basu nor Bhattacharjee could act with the dignity that the occasion deserved, and brought in contentious issues, which was rightly criticised by the chairman of the Indian Council of Historical Research" Roy

The BJP leader said "what is really interesting is the criticism voiced by a class termed as secular historians, against the alleged distortions in history by whom they call obscurantist revivalist.

"They were trying to point a finger at the BJP-led government and specifically Dr M M Joshi, whom they named, but without their knowing they had stumbled on the truth, which may not at all be to their liking ", he said.

"One of the worst offenders in the matter of distortion of history is the leftist government of West Bengal... ", Roy said, adding that the bjp state unit condemned such distortions " effected by the front government in the text books of class IX of the board of secondary education... and also condemns the historians who lend respectability to such governments. "

Meanwhile, the 61st session of the Indian History Congress, which ended here on Friday , decided to meet next year at the Bhoj University in Bhopal with the theme "towards freedom" in 2002 with eminent historian Prof Rama Krishna Chatterjee as its secretary.
