The National Human Rights Commission officials, who visited Garbeta and other sensitive pockets of Midnapore on Thursday and Friday, are convinced that murders have taken place at Chhoto Anguria village under Garbeta police station.

After reaching Midnapore on Thursday afternoon, NHRC director general Y N Srivastav met the District Magistrate and the police superintendent. He also talked at length to villagers, who were present in the village on the night of the carnage, to get a first hand idea of the incidents.

Despite the fact that most of the witnesses of the massacre on January 4 had been scared away to the neighbouring Shaltora village, there were people in Chhoto Anguria who confided to Mr Srivastav that they had seen bodies being moved out of Abdul Rahman Mondal's house where the killings had reportedly taken place. They also alleged that all villagers were forced to stay indoors at gunpoint, and that the terrorising techniques continued till next morning.

The NHRC team also visited Khejuri, where a Trinamool Congress leader Sujata Das had been raped and murdered, and Keshpur, which has been the hub of political violence in Midnapore in recent months.

The NHRC director general also called on Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and met Chief Secretary Monish Gupta and State police Director

General Dipak Sanyal to hear their versions of the frequent skirmishes in West Bengal. Taking all the available details into account, Srivastav will submit a report to the State Home Ministry, along with his personal recommendations, within three days of returning to New Delhi.
