P R Brahmananda, renowned economist and president of the International Economic Association, died here today following cardiac arrest. A bachelor, Brahmananda was 77.

Brahmananda suddenly collapsed in the, afternoon. He breathed his last while being taken to hospital. Brahmananda was the foremost critic of the Second Plan at a time when economists could find nothing wrong with Nehruvian thinking. The alternative model he developed, based on wage goods instead of heavy industry, did not receive support within the country though it was similar to the route China used.
