A Section of the ulema in the city has appealed to the Indian government to oppose the proposed American military action against Iraq. Speaking at a press conference called by the Raza Academy yesterday, Maulana Musanah Miyan of the All India Aimmae Masjid said that ulema (religious heads) in India and abroad would be issuing a fatwa for a boycott of American and British goods.

“Religious scholars and leaders all over the world are in dialogue and the fatwa will be issued if America starts its military operations,” he said.

The boycott would cover American and British products, including financial services (except medicines), he added.

The religious leaders, including Maulana Saiyad Siraj Ashar of the All India Tableeghi Jamaat and Maulana Mansoor Ali Khan of the All India Sunni Jamiatul Ulema, said that since Iraq was India’s friend, the United States Armed Forces should not be allowed to use Indian soil for the military operation.
