Qualifying norm - The Pioneer

Title: Qualifying norm
Author: Editorial
Publication: The Pioneer
Date: January 2, 1998

Recently BJP spokesperson Sushma Swaraj attacked the Congress
saying that in the US a person had to be an American citizen by
birth to qualify to become the president. Now Soniaji's blessings
have electrified the Congress party and even the normally
unflappable Congress spokesperson V N Gadgil has adopted a tough
stance. He responded to Sushmabehn's uncharitable remarks,
saying. "In India we have no such Constitutional provision. But
if such laws were to be applied here, neither Prime Minister
Inder Kumar Gujral nor BJP president L K Advani would qualify"
(both leaders were not horn within the boundaries of the Republic
of India). Gadgil seems to have got Indian citizenship laws a bit
mixed up and his analogy would not go down very well with a large
section of the Capital's citizenry who ware uprooted from their
homes by Partition.
