The Indian Embassy in Washington and office of the Consul General, New York, have received a sum of $300,000 from both Americans and Indian-Americans for the Gujarat Earthquake Relief Fund, Anil Choudhry, Minister, Community Affairs, said here today.
Contributions, mostly from individuals, have been coming steadily during the last 10 days. The embassy has asked the people not to send clothes as relief material since it would be not economic to transport them. Meanwhile, Mayor of Washington, Anthony Williams, and India's Ambassador to the United States Naresh Chandra jointly kicked off a relief campaign here by appealing to people to support the victims of the Gujarat quake.
Addressing a joint news conference along with Chandra, the Mayor urged the district employees, residents, non- profit organisations and businessmen owners to come forward and help the victims. He also handed over a cheque for $ 2500 to the Ambassadors as a token contribution from his office.
A Washington-based telecommunication
company, Startec Global Communications, has announced the setting up of
an Integrated Voice Response (IVR) box in India for use by the victims
of the quake. The victims could call a number which has become operational
in Gujarat to contact relatives free of cost. These telephonic messages
will be automatically transferred to the company's website and be available
for family members of the victims across the world.
