The BJP president, Mr L K Advani, today expressed happiness over
the outcome of the by-elections but conceded that the "secular
logic" has not been completely rejected by the electorate.

The outcome of the elections, which has ended the drought of good
news for the BJP, is being highlighted by the party as a rejection
of the new leadership of the Congress(I) and a vote against the
ruling United Front.

The BJP president, who admitted that the results would have a
restraining impact on the Congress(I) leadership, which is itching
for a confrontation with the government, said the compulsions to
strike at the United Front would increase in the days to come.
"But the setback for the Congress(I) would strengthen the
Congress(I) as the biggest threat for the present regime stems from
Congressmens' exasperation of being out of power," he said.

However, the party president was not willing to retract from his
prediction that 1997 would see a mid-term election. "The present
regime is bundle of contradictions. The arrangement cannot last
for long," Mr Advani said.

In an attempt to rub salt into the wounds of the Congress(I), Mr
Advani said the present leadership of the Congress(I) cannot lay
the blame for their defeat on any particular individual. "It is
futile to blame the former Congress president The Congress(I) is
hurtling downhill not because of the sins committed by Mr Rao
alone, but also because of the accumulated sins of all Congress
leaders", he said.
