With indications pointing the elevation of K R Narayanan to the
post of the President, aspirants for the job of the vice-president
have started soliciting support for their respective claims.
Quickest off the block is Ms Najma Heptuallah. The Rajya Sabha
chairperson, who has spared no occasion, to project herself as the
"natural successor" to Mr Narayanan, according to sources, is now
busy soliciting the support of the opposition BJP. Her mission,
which took her to the BJP president's Panadara Raod residence on
Monday, however, has not gone down well with her colleagues in the
Congress.
The prime minister's nominee, Karnataka governor, Khurshid Alam
Khan, who has failed to muster the support from the constituents of
the ruling United Front is also learnt to be angling for the post.
