Four people were killed and 12 injured in communal clashes in the old city area of Akola on Saturday. Three died in police firing, while one was killed in a stabbing incident.

According to minister of state for home Kripa Shankar Singh, the flare-up was provoked by a group of miscreants, who threw colour powder on a place of worship. The incident triggered stray incidents of stone-pelting on Friday. Tension mounted on Saturday afternoon, with reports of rioting and stone-throwing in the old city area. The police had to resort to firing to control the mob, killing three.

Additional chief secretary (home) Asoke Basak said curfew had been imposed since afternoon in the old city area. The rest of the town, he said, was peaceful. Additional SRP personnel had been deployed, he said, adding that the situation was under control.

Minister of state for home (rural) Manikrao Thakrey and guardian minister of Akola Satish Chaturvedi have rushed to Akola to take stock of the situation.
