Forty-eight hours after the suspension of trade along the Indo-Bangla border in the northeast, life has come to an absolute halt in these areas.

Hundreds of trucks laden with coal are lined up on NH 40 leading to the Local Customs Station in Dawki Meghalaya on the Indo-Bangla border.

The stand off came following the abduction of a customs official of the Government of India along with six workers of a coal exporter from the LCS at Ghasuapara on February 28 by members of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB).

This is the first time that a customs official of the government of India has been held for ransom.

Meanwhile there are reports that the negotiations are still carrying on with the abductors in Dhaka for the safe release of the abducted official.
