Top Bharatiya Janata Party and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh leaders
will hold short training camps, away from the preying eyes of the
media, at different places across the country to prepare them for a
possible snap mid term poll. According to senior party leaders,
the training camps will begin after the BJP's Thiruvananthapuram
national executive and national council.
The elected members will be given practical tips on nursing ones
constituency by the party and parliamentary veteran who won through
man an electoral battle. Not only will the MPs and MLAs be asked
to nurse their constituencies but also required to increase their
sphere of influence to neighbouring constituencies. Selected
members will also be given newer areas to conquer as part of
preparations for snap general elections, which the party
anticipates any time during the year.
The BJP leadership is planning to conduct the training sessions for
its MPs and MLAs in association with RSS, during which emphasis
will be on party ideology and correcting legislators behaviour as
also to bring them closer to party cadres. The plan is to be
finalised and formally announced at, the party's National Council
meeting scheduled for April 5, 6 and 7 in Thiruvananthapuram in
Kerala.
The first of the series of such camps will be held for Lok Sabha
and Rajya Sabha MPs "in the outskirts or outside Delhi" sometime
around mid-April. It will be called 'MPs study camp' where the
parliament members from both the Houses will be exposed to
reorientation lectures by senior party leaders and other
influential Sangh Parivar leaders. One key BJP General Secretary
has been entrusted with the task of drawing up the organisational
plan and co-ordinate with RSS, which has taken serious note of
dissidence activity in the different state units of the BJP. This
party functionary has also sought suggestions from the state units
on the 'course content' and logistics. The main idea behind the
exercise, explained a senior BJP leader, was to facilitate "free
and frank exchange of views between the members away from burly
city life."
On top of the leadership's agenda is the need to further strengthen
discipline among the members and to improve party-government
interaction to prevent any Gujarat type dissidence erupting in
other places. In addition there will be sessions on current
political situation and economic scenario.
A senior BJP leader admitted that there was need to cleanse the
party of polluting elements, especially since any fast growing
political party attracted all kinds of elements. He however
hastened to add that the BJP did not entertain any suspicions over
'outsiders' who have joined the party in the recent years. "Neither
there is any discrimination against such persons," he said.
According to party sources, these camps will be of two days to
three days duration and will be held in all the states. Following
the first one at the national level for the MPs and Central Party
office bearers, different state units will be organising similar
training camps for MLAs, MLCs and state party cadre. Central
leaders will also be attending the state level camps according to
their convenience.
It is being estimated that the exercise will be completed in two
months time. There was indeed a proposal for a lengthy centralised
training camp, which was given up as impractical due to logistical
reasons.
