Have you ever wondered how hypocritical the media can be?
On one hand it takes pride in being the 'protector of democracy',
who takes the lead in exposing the corrupt men who inhabit this
great country. On the other, it Indulges in the same corrupt
practices It seeks to expose.
Sample this: A leading trade union that espoused the cause of the
contractual labour force in Mumbai, organised a press conference.
It had just emerged victorious in a case at the Supreme Court.
A three star hotel in Marine Lines was the venue for the
conference, which was followed by cocktails and dinner.
The wine flowed, and the press and hosts mingled freely. Our
colleague, who was having a casual conversation with a union
official, suddenly found a plain envelope thurst into his hand.
More documents? No, the envelope contained crisp Rs 100 notes,
around five or six in number. "What is this?" he asked, startled.
A perplexed union chappie eyed him with some consternation, smiled
and stated, "A goodwill gesture on our behalf. Please do not
refuse."
Protests from the colleague brought a senior union functionary on
the scene. His sole intention was to hush up the noise. "This is
just for conveyance sir. Please join us for a drink."
Naturally, the other journalists eyed him with disdain,
uncomfortably shuffling around the bar. Mind you, none of the
30-odd journalists who had made it a point to attend, objected.
They looked happy at having received this unexpected bounty. We
wonder, who will expose the corrupt journalists?
