Former Congress MLA Nandkumar Jhavre has alleged involvement of his
own party leaders in the Shrirampur statue-desecration incident
which claimed one life and destruction of substantial public
property last week.
Mr Jhavre and some of his party colleague said in a statement that
the insult to Dr B. R. Ambedkar's memory at Shrirampur had been
engineered to discredit new Shiv Sena entrant Radhakrishan Vikhe
Patil, who was to be sworn as a cabinet minister the next day.
Mr Jhavre said Mr Vikhe's inclusion in the Sena-BJP government had
unnerved Congress leaders, who were afraid that their political
future in the district would end with this development.
Mr Jhavre said Congress leaders were frustrated since dalits and
backward class people had been favouring the Sena-BJP alliance,
which had ensured that no communal conflagrations were taking place
in the state. The Shrirampur incident was engineered to shatter
communal peace, he alleged.
