A jubilant Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) decided to "wait and watch"
the fast changing political developments following the withdrawal
of support by the Congress to the Deve Gowda government. The
party's central leadership feels that "things are certainly moving
towards a mid-term poll."
The party Is top leaders who had been constantly predicting the
fall of the 13-party United Front government had been recently
itching for fresh polls particularly after the BJP's growing
popularity as demonstrated by the elections in Punjab and a series
of by-polls In other parts of the country.
These leaders now feel that the "long wait for the party is over
and the much needed general elections were round the corner."
Party president L.K. Advani, who had described the U F government
as the "theatre of the absurd" was not surprised over the
developments. He said, "The inevitable had happened. it all
depends now on how President S.D. Sharma responds to the
situation." He said he knew that the UF government would not last
long and now the Congress efforts,, to form a government would also
not succeed.
The party leaders who are in an up-beat mood feel that if general
elections take place within a few months the BJP would be able to
get an absolute majority in the Lok Sabha in view of its "good
image and credibility in the country."
