Vishwa Hindu Parishad president Ashok Singhal Thursday said the people of Assam had lost faith in the ruling AGP as it had "failed to fulfil its promise of disfranchising illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in the state."
Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Singhal said the AGP had first come to power on the promise of disenfranchising the migrants, but over the years it did not keep its assurance.
"The AGP has been instead swayed by the votes of the immigrant minorities," he alleged.
Singhal insisted that all immigrants from Bangladesh should be disfranchised.
However, when asked whether the Hindu Bangladeshis were considered immigrants by the VHP, Singhal said, "They are refugees who had been forced to flee here".
Expressing serious concern over Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence's attempts to destabilise the country, the VHP president said the government should adopt strong measures against it.
Singhal also accused the church
in the north east of displacing a large number of Hindus, including Chakmas
and Nepalis, especially in Tripura.
