Kerala's ruling front, the UDF, has recommended that the government create a level playing field for the educational institutions run by the majority community.
The UDF meeting on Thursday has suggested extending all the prevailing benefits enjoyed by the minority-run education institutions to the institutions run by the Hindu community. This would mean that the majority-run schools and colleges would have a 50 per cent community quota without the interference of the government.
Earlier, the Hindu-run educational institutions had neither the quota nor the freedom to charge the fee. They had to comply with the government ceilings on fee, while the minority-run institutions enjoyed unbridled freedom on this count. This had created communal ill-will and a sense of injustice to one community.
The level-playing field in education was the major and long-pending demand of the majority community educators. It was pointed out in the meeting that of the 17 self-financing engineering and medical colleges sanctioned last year, only three belonged to the Hindu commnuity, while five belonged to Muslim community and nine to the Christians.
The Front decision followed the
meetings ruling Front leaders had with the Nair and Ezhava (OBC) community
leaders recently. Both had asked for equal footing in the education field
