Title : Bengal unit of BJP smells a rat
Author : PTI
Publication : The Economic Times
Date : April 5, 1997

The West Bengal unit of BJP today said that the party would not be
surprised if the Congress formed the government at the Centre with
the support of the CPI-M.

The state, secretary of the party, Mr Rahul Sinha told newsmen that
the Congress leader, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, had already talked to the
state chief minister, Mr Jyoti Basu, over telephone and later met
him and the CPI-M general secretary, Mr Harkishen Singh Surjeet, in
Delhi.

Stating that the statement of Mr Basu that communalism could not be
fought without the Congress, revealed the understanding between the
Congress and CPI-M, he said that history showed that CPI-M always
bailed out Congress whenever the latter faced crisis.

He said that Mr Basu's statement indicated that the CPI-M could go
to any extent in the name of fighting communalism. Mr Basu he,
wanted to install a weak Congress government or a "hodgepodge
government at the Centre".
