At least two militants of the banned Hizbul Mujahideen were killed
and three others, one of them in an injured condition, were
arrested by Border Security Force (BSF) following an encounter at
Nowhatta in downtown Srinagar, today.

A BSF spokesman said troops confronted five armed militants m
Nowhatta around 1045 hours today during routine patrolling.

The militants, who were hiding in a house, hurled a grenade on the
troops, who immediately cordoned them and in the ensuing shootout,
two of the militants were killed and the other three arrested, the
spokesman said.

In another incident, militants made an abortive attempt on the life
of a police officer.

Police said militants, armed with sophisticated weapons, opened
fire on the vehicle of a sub-divisional police officer, Ehanyar
police station Mohammad Shafi Patoo near Islamia College m downtown
Srinagar early today

Cops retaliated, but the militants managed to escape from the
scene. There was no report of any casualty, but the vehicle of the
police officer suffered some damages in the incident.

Patoo had survived a similar attack by militants early this year.

Even though the authorities are confronting militants in the heart
of the city, the residents of Batmaloo area of central Srinagar
took to streets last night in protest against the security forces
raiding some localities of the thickly-populated area.

They alleged that army troops raided Bonupora, New Colony and
Deyarwani and lifted nearly six youths, ransacked houses and beat
up the inmates of the houses' The agitationists demanded immediate
release of the youths apprehended illegally.

Elsewhere two militants, including a foreign mercenary, were killed
m two separate clashes with army search parties in frontier
district of Kupwara last night.

A rifle, a pistol, two grenades and some ammunition were recovered
from them.

A spokesman said army search parties also seized a rifle, its two
magazines, 68 rounds and 14 hand grenades from two separate
abandoned militant hideouts in Kupwara and Pulwama district today.

Six Pakistan-trained militants also laid down their arms before
army authorities at Panzgam garrison, about 40 kms from Kupwara
town in frontier district of Kupwara, today.

The ceremony began with the surrendering militants offering 'namaz'
(prayer) along with their relatives and security personnel at the
army camp mosque of the battalion of Maratha Light Infantry, the
spokesman said.

He said, security personnel motivated these misguided youth with
the help of their parents and relatives to surrender.
