Only a true patriotic statesman and committed leaders of dauntless
courage can help India overcome the current crisis and bring about a
transformation in all spheres of life, according to eminent people drawn
from various fields.
After the Congress withdrew support to the Deve Gowda-led United Front
government on March 30, people said there is urgent need to focus on
this point, which could give a positive direction to India's social,
political, economic, religious and cultural scenario.
Noted jurist Nani Palkhivala said, "Unless we solve the problem of
leadership, there is no question of talking about any improvement in the
present scenario." The main objective was to find a good leader, and "if
at all India had ever produced a leader, it was Mahatma Gandhi," he
added.
Nana Chudasama, former sheriff of Mumbai and president of Clean Mumbai
said, "All I can say is that India needs just another Sardar Vallabhai
Patel to remove the existing vacuum in the leadership of the nation."
Retired state director general of police K P Medhekar pointed out that
"a politician only thinks about the next election, whereas a true
patriotic statesman thinks about the present and future welfare of the
country."
Medhekar said, "The leader should be courageous, honest, knowledgeable,
a man of compassion and humility," adding only a brave man could lead
others.
Many intellectuals, social and cultural activists, philosophers, lawyers
and scientists, however, expressed optimism, saying whenever Dharma
(righteousness) was in danger, there always emerged a set of committed
individuals to ensure the triumph of virtue.
Dr V S Venkatavaradan, director, Nehru Planetarium, said, "India needs a
leader who is not only lively and ebullient, but also serious in
business. A man with a combination of science, arts and literature will
be preferable."
Social scientists Nilima Chaturvedi and Rahda Venkataraman said the
stage is set for people to elect individuals with wisdom, character,
morality and virtues. Indiscipline, disorder and chaos were the
cumulative effect of Machiavellian politics, the social scientists
observed.
