There is an American saying that if a man's family history has to be exposed,
just make him to stand as a Presidential candidate! In, India too, same
thing is happening. As anticipated in many quarters, foreign minister I K
Gujral has now been elected as the successor to the Prime Minister Deve
Gowda. Gujral's Past association with the left and. the present association
with media tycoon A K Jain, have proved to be his assets at this juncture.
Further, Sitaram Kesri's proximity to the Jain family has become another
factor which helped Gujral. The moment he became a serious contender, quick
came the family exposure of Gujral. An unsigned document containing the
family history of Gujral has been in circulation in the capital. According to
the document, Gujral's father, Late - Avtar Narain Gujral, was one of the 17
Hindu signatories in the Legislative Assembly of Independent Pakistan to have
accepted the Constitution of Pakistan. "No wonder, therefore," the document
goes on, "that our present External Affairs Minister is ready to give away
Indian interests to serve the interests of Pakistan". It may be mentioned
that when, in the Cabinet meeting, Gujral pleaded for a softer line towards
Pakistan Gowda sarcastically remarked that he knew why Gujral was
sentimentally attached to the issue.
