Law and order has improved after the formation of the BJP-BSP
government, State president of Bharatiya Janata Party Rajnath Singh
told reporters on Monday.
"This is not the end. There is still scope for improvement and the
effort of Chief Minister Mayawati to bring order is commendable,"
he said. Mr Singh defended Ms Mayawati for transferring officers
and said: " It is the Chief Minister's prerogative to transfer
officers." When specifically asked about the officers of certain
caste who have been given plum postings in the state
administration, he said: "BJP does not believe in caste. So we do
not weigh the things as others do."
However, he did not rule out another administrative reshuffle after
five months when Mr Kalyan Singh takes over from Ms Mayawati. "He
(Kalyan Singh) will appoint officers according to his choice," was
the terse answer of Mr Singh.
He, however, rued the politicisation of the bureaucracy in the
State. "The officers have aligned with respective political
parties. Some of the officers could hamper the good work of the
BJP-BSP coalition government," he said.
He scotched the misgivings that the government would not last long.
"Mayawati may be the Chief Minister, but this is our government
and this has been conveyed to the party workers at the grass root
level," said the BJP leader. When asked about BJP's
non-participation in the Ambedkar mela, Mr Singh said that BJP
observes Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar's birthday as Samata Diwas
every year. This year too the day was observed with fanfare, he
said.
