Prime Minister I K Gujral today ruled out the possibility of
converting line of control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir into
permanent border with Pakistan and turned down suggestion for
holding talks with the All-Party Hurriat Conference (APHC) for
ending militancy in the state.
"The question (of converting LoC into international border) does
not arise," Mr Gujral retorted when asked whether or not he
favoured the conversion of LoC into permanent border as had been
suggested by the Jammu and Kashmir chief minister, Mr Farooq
Abdullah.
On the suggestion of holding talks with the APHC leadership, the
Prime Minister said there was no Plan to hold talks with these
leaders. Stressing his government's commitment to build cordial
relations with Pakistan and other neighbouring countries, the Prime
Minister, in a brief chat with newspersons after delivering
convocation address at Jammu University, pointed out that the
process of dialogue with Pakistan was already underway as talks
with that country have been held recently at the levels of foreign
secretaries and foreign ministers.
Mr Gujral also disclosed that he would meet his Pakistani
counterpart, Mr Nawaz Sharif at male next month.
Earlier, addressing the Eighth convocation of the Jammu University,
the Prime Minister said the threat of nuclear conflict had not been
slated as the nuclear powers still had large stocks of nuclear
weapons.
