Congress will consider with an open mind proposals from the United
Front to give stability to the Gujral government, Congress Working
Committee member, Mr Rajesh Pilot said today.
Mr Pilot stated this in an informal chat with newsmen when asked to
comment on the TMC leader, Mr G K Moopanar's reported statement
that the Congress should join the new UF government to provide it
stability.
Earlier, addressing the district Congress workers convention, Mr
Pilot said that the Congress would not do anything that would bring
instability in the country.
Detailing reasons for the Congress withdrawal of support to the
Deve Gowda government he recalled the anti-Congress statements made
by various UF leaders.
Expressing satisfaction over the proposed organisational polls next
month, he called for firm steps to weed out corrupt elements from
the party so as to make it more vibrant and to restore it the past
glory.
The former Union minister said that organisational polls were all
the more needed when the party no longer has charismatic leaders
like Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.
A party MLA from Rajasthan, Mr Ramachandra, urged Mr Pilot to
contest the election for the party president's post. His
suggestion was cheered by the audience.
Mr Pilot said that he had suggested during a recent meeting of the
party working committee that those holding high positions should
give up their posts if charges are made against them and should not
wait for getting cleared from the courts. He said, however, the
suggestion was not found acceptable.
The CWC member said that he had held discussions with the party
chief, Mr Sitaram Kesri and impressed upon him the need to ask the
government to further strengthen developmental programmes in order
to help the poor.
