Spiralling violence and attacks by bands of armed men freely moving around the villages of West Bengal have compelled the worried state administration to take stock of the build up of licensed guns in the districts. A review of Midnapore district’s Keshpur police station, possible the most disturbed area in West Bengal, revealed that there were around 800 licensed guns, a jump from 1990 when there were only 400 valid licensed weapons.
A connection between
a spurt in the number of licensed guns and armed clashed seems to be emerging,
altering the ways in which West Bengal has hitherto handled its political
differences. The most sensitive hub has been identified as the three districts
of Midnapore, Hooghly and Bankura.
