Title : Sonia had threatened divorce if Rajiv entered politics: book
Author :
Publication : The Daily
Date : May 12, 1997

Sonia Gandhi may have signalled her plunge into active politics by becoming a
primary member of the Congress party, but politics had long remained an area she
had been the most indifferent to, according to biographers of the Nehru-Gandhi
family, reports PTI.

On page 47 of his book. Nicholas Nugnet says." Following Sanjay's death, it was
probably inevitable that Rajiv would enter politics, but there remained the task
of reconciling his mother's wishes with Sonia's opposition. According to Indira
Gandhi, Sonia had threatened to divorce Rajiv if he ever entered politics." (Said
to Kushwant Singh and quoted from From Raj to Rajiv by Marc Tully and Minoo
Masani. The book was published in 1990).

According to Tariq Ali, author of The Nehrus and the Gandhis, an Indian Dynasty,
at one stage Sonia had told a friend that site would rather have her children beg
in the streets than Rajiv going into politics.

"She probably much more than him, regarded politics as filthy, corrupt, and
riddled with sychophants, who she disliked intensely," said Ali in his book,
adding, "There was, after all, no shortage of them at 1, Safdarjang Road" (the
then official residence of prime minister Indira Gandhi).

But Rajiv Gandhi eventually resigned from Indian airlines 11 months after Sanjay's
death in June 1980, and plunged headlong into politics, primarily to help his
lonely mother and prime minister Indira Gandhi.
