The strategy- on which top Sena leaders had been working for the past few days - was finalised today at a meeting held by opposition leader Narayan Rane at his Vidhan Bhavan office.
Accordingly, former minister of state for home Gajanan Kirtikar will challenge the action against him in the High Court next week. Kirtikar and another Sena MLA, Nandkumar Kale, were recently arrested by the Special Task Force under the charges of inciting communal feelings during the riots of 1992-93.
In the petition, the party will object to the implementation of the report pointing out that the previous Sena-BJP alliance government had rejected the same when it had been tabled in the state legislature. “The DF government began implementation of the report without seeking the nod of the legislature which was in violation of the legislative rules,” Rane said.
The Sena will challenge this in the High Court and also point out that the STF did not give the arrested Senamen any chance to clarify their stand before initiating action against them.
“We discussed the case with our advocates and they told us that the whole action can be proved illegal and politically motivated,” Rane said. Even the offences registered against the Sena leaders are bailable and the maximum punishment under the law for such crimes is three years.
On the other hand, the party is all set to take political mileage out of the DF government’s action. This will include circulating booklets showing how the injustice was being done with the leaders who protected Hindus during the communal clashes in Mumbai. The Sena leaders will address meetings all over the city criticising the DF government’s “undue action to appease Muslims.” “We will simply tell the people what them panel said about assaults on Hindus and the same about Muslims. They are themselves the best judge to draw the conclusion,” Rane said.
The party will also highlight that the persons who deposed before the riot panel and spoke against Sena were biased against the party.
Today’s meeting was attended by
former assembly speaker Datta Nalawade, Kirtikar, Kale and party legislators
Diwakar Raote, Bala Nandgaonkar, Arvind Savant and Kanhaiyalal Gidwani.
