The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) is worried that unchecked influx of Bangladeshis into the north eastern states could upstage the dominance of tribal communities and lead to their losing reservations in legislatures and Parliament.
A letter written by NCM chairman Tarlochan Singh to Kuldip Singh, chairman, Delimitation Commission, has asked the commission to devise “special provisions” to ensure continued political representation to tribal communities. It has also asked the commission to keep in mind adverse conditions under which tribals were being forced to survive across the country.
Since bulk of population in the region comprises tribals, the NCM chief’s letter says, “the influx of Bangladeshis in the north eastern states has affected the life and culture of tribals in the region.”
According to sources, the provocation
for the letter is the recent analysis of the census of religion by population
experts.
