SRINAGAR: Fourteen people have been killed in fresh violence in Kashmir, the police said on Monday as the army reported Pakistani shelling across the border.
Police said Indian security forces shot dead four militants in two encounters in the northern district of Kupwara.
"Both the clashes erupted along the Line of Control," a police spokesman said, referring to the de facto border that divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan.
Indian border guards shot dead five intruders in Ramgarh sector of Jammu, about 350 km south of Srinagar, minutes after they crossed the international border from Pakistan, a border guard spokesman said.
Two militants were shot dead by army and police counter-insurgency units at Tsukar village, near Patan township, 30 km north of Srinagar.
Police said two soldiers and two civilians were injured during the exchange.
Meanwhile, the toll from a two-day encounter in Kupwara rose to 10 with the killing of two soldiers and a civilian porter late Sunday evening, a police spokesman said, adding that the shootout had since ended.
Panic, meanwhile, gripped Karnah, a remote frontier area situated 150 km north of Srinagar, which came under a barrage of Pakistani artillery fire on Sunday evening. There were no civilian or army casualities.
"The apparent target was an Indian
army camp," a military source said, adding that the Indian army did not
