The ruling National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday moved a resolution in the state assembly demanding abrogation of the Indo-Pak Indus water pact contending that it had caused immense loss to the people.

Moving the resolution in the Assembly, Saifullah Mir (NC) asked the state government to recommend to the Centre to scrap the four decades-old treaty as it was signed without seeking opinion of the people in the state and it had affected its economy immensely.

In the legislative council, irrigation minister Qaummer Ali Akhoon said although the state government was not competent to aborgate or modify the treaty, it will consider storage of water in the tributaries of Chenab river as provided in the treaty.

Under the pact, the Indus and its tributaries have been have been categorized into Eastern rivers (comprising Sutlej, Ravi and Beas) and Western rivers comprising Indus, Jehlum and Chenab.

According to article 11 of the treaty, Pakistan has to receive, for unrestricted use, the waters of western rivers and India is under an obligation to let flow all the waters of these rivers without harnessing it by constructing dams.
