Even if you are a terrorist whose organisation has been banned by the US, it seems you can buy ammunition from India's security forces.

The Lashkar-e-Taiba, banned by the US State Department and responsible for the June 28 massacre of 12 sleeping jawans at the Sunjwan Cantonment in Jammu, had apparently bought AK-47 bullets at Rs 20,000 a box from police, special operation group and paramilitary personnel.

This has been reported by the Home Ministry to the National Security Advisor following investigations into the Sunjwan killings.

The report says the Lashkar team which carried out the Sunjwan attack under a pseudonym, is likely to attempt further strikes.

They are under pressure from their bosses on the other side of the LoC to step up their activities, which have recently been curtailed by the extra-vigilant Army.

The tightening of the LoC had dried up the Lashkar's ammunition supply, which, presumably, is why its cadres purchased ammunition from the state police and the paramilitary forces.

The ammunition, says the Home Ministry report, is from seized stores. Identifying the culprits would be difficult because the Lashkar would have used a cut-out to purchase the ammunition.

Rumours of bad apples in the security forces have been around for some time. Captured militants have occasionally disclosed that they were able to infiltrate into the sensitive northern state after payment at the border for security personnel to look the other way. Yet it appears that all involved seem to cover their tracks very well, given the lack of official action on the matter.

Word of the latest information has not yet reached Military Intelligence, perhaps because the report is too recent to have figured in the weekly meetings that the head of the Defence Intelligence Agency has with other intelligence outfits.

However, an Army source said that he was galled at the news, considering how Indian soldiers and their families have been the target of ruthless terrorist attacks. The Kaluchak attack nearly made India take military action.
