The BJP State vice-president, P. S. Sreedharan Pillai, has appealed to the Muslim leadership to lead the efforts to restore lasting peace in violence- ravaged Marad.

In an open letter addressed to leaders of Muslim organisations, Mr. Pillai said the Muslim leadership's response to the Marad massacre had been confined to condemnation of the incident. This was not enough. It was time for a more constructive approach to restore peace in Marad.

The right climate for rehabilitation of displaced Muslims had to be created. For that, the confidence of the victims had to be gained. The Muslim leadership should take the initiative to persuade the Government to accept the demands of the victims of the attack, he said.

Mr. Pillai claimed that the BJP and the RSS had played a key role in averting retaliatory strikes. This was achieved by giving an assurance to Marad's enraged youth that there would be an impartial inquiry and the victims and their relatives would get justice. To expose the conspiracy behind the massacre, its terrorist links and inter-State ramifications, a CBI inquiry was necessary. The Araya Samajam and all Hindu organisations in the State had demanded a CBI inquiry. Even supporters of the ruling front and the PDP also supported this demand.

The letter is addressed to Panakkad Mohammed Ali Shihab Thangal (IUML), Kanthapuram Aboobacker Musaliar (All India Sunni Scholars Board), A. P. Abdul Khader Maulavi and Hussain Madavur (Mujahid leaders), Siddique Hassan (Jamaat-i-Islami), Fazal Gafoor (MES) and P. M. Mohammed Koya (MSS).
